Sailing team Synergy is the long-term project created with the help of private means of a group of Russian businessmen in 2004. Love for the sea and passion for sailing have become motivation and driving force for taking part in a project. The main goal has been to create professional Russian-speaking sailing crew, that is able to compete against the most experienced teams of the world on equal grounds. The investors of the project are Pavel Gorelov, Vladimir Senko, Vladimir Smyshlyaev, Mikhail Tuzov, Roman Trotsenko and well-known Russian politician, businessman and public figure – Valentin Zavadnikov, the crew captain.
To achieve the set goal evolutional way of team development has been chosen by the project investors. By the end of 2004 the process of team forming had been completed, the evidence of which was 2nd-place won on board of chater yacht in a famous regatta of the Mediterranean - Rolex Middle Sea Race.
In April 2005 the first own team’s yacht was launched in the water. It was 40-foot-long criusing yacht built in Italy of the Grand Soleil project. On board of this yacht Synergy crew started 2005 with the victory in a prestigious international regatta XXII Trofeo Accademia Navale, which took place in April in Livorno. For six months of 2005 season Synergy sailing team has covered the distance of 2385 nautical miles between the race destinations, took part in 11 the most prestigious international regattas and won 3 first and 7 prizes.
Team achievements during that period >>>
When the resourses of the first yacht were exhausted, the project participants carried out the detailed analysis of the existing situation in the world-wide sailing sports. The planet elite of yachting are the America’s Cup competition and round-the-world regatta Volvo Ocean Race. Synergy project investors set America’s Cup as their goal as the most dynamic and interesting contest, each lap of which attracts intent attention of the public. The closest class of yachts to those participating in these races was and is the hi-technological yacht class Transpac 52.
There are only several dozens of these yachts in the world so far, the interest for their competition is great on part of the audience and mass-media, because the most professional and experienced sailing teams take part in them. In Transpac 52 class the size of the yacht, its crew and sports characteristics, casing and sail materials do not differ much from the yachts, which take part in America’s Cup. Designers of TP52 use the same results of preliminary researches, modeling and designing. The same materials, formulas and equipment. It is possible to produce these yachts which are equipped with hi-technological facilities and take part in yacht building only on several shipyards in the world.
TP52 participate in the races with true time, without various formulas of time estimation after the finish which makes the sailing difficult to understand. If you crossed the finish line the first, - you are the first and no one else. The TP52 class of yachts after the victories in the series of races with the other types of yachts is considered to be the fastest yachts in the world.
2006. Synergy Team joined the main yacht races of Transpac 52 class - MedCup 2006 only from the third event. Despite this fact, in the general record based on the result of the whole cycle of regattas it found itself in the middle of the list of the strongest crews of Europe. That year the team ended its season winning 1-st place overall in Rolex Malta Trophy (coast lap of Rolex Middle Sea Race), Malta, 17-18 of October.
2007. In January-March Synergy took part in three regattas along the shores of the USA (Florida). The return to Europe showed that the sailing to America and competition in winter period proved their value: the total place of the team in Breitling MedCup 2007 – was 13th.
For the period of regattas along the coasts of the USA in January-March of 2008 leading yachtsmen of the world have been involved in participating in trainings of the Synergy team. As a result:
2008. 3rd place - Acura Miami Grand Prix 2008.
Having succeeded in winter period – three regattas along the coasts of the USA (state Florida) – in Miami, in Key-West and 170-mile race in Fort Lauderdale in Key West. Since April the team took part in regattas in Europe, including Audi MedCup 2008.
The project participants made a decision to stay in Transpac 52 type of yachts as the most modern and technologically challenging. Thus the team has got a new yacht of this type in the summer of 2008. The result of the season was the 6th place in TP52 World Championship.
In the winter of 2009 Synergy sailing team on it’s first Transpac 52 took part in two regattas in the USA. The results were: 3rd place in “Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race” and 3rd place in “Acura Miami Grand Prix 2009”. And at the same time the new Synergy Transpac 52 was being prepared for the summer season in Europe – it was under work on yacht design modification taking into account the newest achievements in the theory of sailing, which significantly enhances the racing characteristics.
In 2009 Synergy won 4th place in the final event of Audi MedCup 2009 and 4th place in TP52 World Championship as well. During the events Synergy used to finish first in several races. That’s why the new yacht of Synergy since the middle of 2006 has become the yacht of this class, designed by Shaun Carkeek.
Synergy became a preferential shareholder of World Sailing Teams Association (WSTA) and co-founder of one of the best and most prestigious series Louis Vuitton Trophy. America's Cup ACC5 yachts were used for the series.
Synergy came in third at the very first Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta in Nice in November 2009, and later, in June 2010 Synergy was second at Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena after losing only Emirates Team New Zealand in the finals with the score 2-3.

Then the team participated in the RC44 Championship Tour's events in Miami (December 2010), San Diego (March 2011) and Gmunden (May 2011), and in Key West Race Week-2011. The RC44 Championship Tour made stops in Italy, Sweden and Spain in 2011. In 2011 season the Russians had 15 match race victories and 5 fleet racing top-3 finished.
Audi MedCup's 2011 season has begun in Cascais. The Cascais Trophy regatta was held on 17-22 May, and Synergy, which has built the new yacht specially for the series, captured fourth place after winning one race and finishing twice in top-3 during the event. Audi MedCup's 2011 stops were Marseille, Cagliari, Cartagena and Barcelona. Synergy won 4 races and had 14 top-3 finished in MedCup-2011.
In 2012 season Synergy has become the RC44 match racing World Champion and won 22 of 28 races in this format. The crew with co-owners-helmsmen Valentin Zavadnikov and Leonid Lebedev and tactician Ed Baird was leading through almost the whole season and won the trophy.
The success in RC44 and a debut in dynamic Melges32 promoted Synergy to the "Best Russian Sailing Team" prize.
In 2013 Synergy continued to compete in RC44 and Melges32 classes and participated in more than 15 regattas in Europe, the USA, the Carribean and the Middle East.
In spring 2013 Synergy announced thу establishment of the new winter Melges20 series, in which the team will both participate and most importantly organize the regattas together with the legendary Yacht Club de Monaco and RUS7 team.
"Our team will be responsible for the organization of the new series of regattas and it's an absolutely new experience for us", said Valentin Zavadnikov, co-owner and captain of Synergy Team. "Our team was founded 9 years ago and for the first time ever we become the organizers of sailing regattas."
Synergy has entered new and interesting phase of its development after it has become the organizer of the Melges20 regattas. More than 20 Russian and foreign crews took part in the inaugural edition of the new winter circuit.
In 2014 Synergy is set to take part in more than 20 regattas in RC44, Melges32 and Melges20 classes.
Synergy is the current vice-champion in both disciplines in RC44 class – match and fleet racing.
